De Buris Amarone Riserva 2008

Amarone della Valpolicella DOC

Download

De Buris is a timeless wine and a new classic. It is the culmination of the talent, passion, patience, and discipline of the Tommasi family in making Amarone, and an homage to the Valpolicella region and its great winemaking potential.

Vineyard

The vineyard known as la Groletta, in the municipality of Sant’Ambrogio, is considered the epitome of the Valpolicella Classico zone. Extended hours of sunlight and the cool, gentle breeze from Lake Garda provide a particularly favorable microclimate, and one that is unique in Valpolicella. The soil composition reinforces the area’s characteristic aromas of ripe red fruit and intense dark spices.

Winemaking

The selected grapes are placed on traditional arele, bamboo racks, and then left to dry for 110 days in a room specially equipped with a ventilation system that maintains a constant flow of air and low humidity. The grapes are pressed in January and ferment slowly for 30 days in oak vats, using exclusively indigenous yeasts. Malolactic fermentation takes place twice in the first two years of ageing in Slavonian oak barrels following the phases of the moon and the seasons. The wine then refines for 5 years in oak barrels of 15/30hl.

Tasting Note

This luxury Amarone is on the more austere and elegant side, defying the stereotype of Amarone as a hefty, slightly sweet wine… coming from a vineyard that produces more complexity and aromas than sugar power.

Reviews

"Long and flavorful. Decadent and wonderful."

James Suckling - November 26, 2018 "Big Amarone with dried berries, cloves and chocolate. Hints of hazelnuts, too. Full body and round, soft tannins that are fully resolved now. Long and flavorful. Decadent and wonderful. Gorgeous now.”

"It’s a lithe, elegant Amarone"

Wine & Spirits - January 18, 2019 "Introduced this year, De Buris Riserva is the culmination of a project that began in 2000 when Tommasi acquired 4.5 acres in La Groletta, a vineyard at the top of La Grola hill, and purchased Villa De Buris, a 14th-century estate that will become the family’s headquarters. The 2008 De Buris aged in large Slavonian casks for seven years, developing notes of mushroom, dried leaves and savory spices that complement the flavors of dried plum and fig. It’s a lithe, elegant Amarone that would partner well with aged sirloin."

"Flavors of baked cherry, spiced orange peel, coffee liqueur, graphite and dusty sage.

Wine Spectator - April 24, 2019 "Lovely aromas and flavors of baked cherry, spiced orange peel, coffee liqueur, graphite and dusty sage waft from the glass and expand on the palate of this creamy, medium- to full-bodied Amarone."

"Graceful and elegant"

Wine Advocate - October 11, 2019 "This is the exciting new project by the Tommasi family that unveiled much fanfare at the end of 2018. The wine is linked to a gorgeous historic property, the stately Villa De Buris, that has been acquired by Tommasi and will one day become a luxury hotel. For now, we can enjoy the 2008 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva de Buris (with 7,940 bottles and 200 magnums made). The grapes came from the nearby Groletta vineyard that was planted 19 years ago. The wines see 110 days of appassimento and five years in oak. The fruit is delicate and streamlined. The best part of this wine is that it never shows the exaggerated thickness or heaviness that you often find in its peers. De Buris is graceful and elegant."

"Firm yet ripe mid-palate extraction and crisp acidity"

Decanter - April 2, 2020 "This outstanding Amarone opens on the nose with liquorice candy, carob and leather in a lively, oxidative style. It has firm yet ripe mid-palate extraction and crisp acidity which pushes the umami length longer, demonstrating how very important bottle ageing is for achieving the complex balance of Amarone."
